How to Meet DEA MATE Act Training Requirements: What Clinicians Need to Know

<p style="font-size: 20px; font-style: italic; line-height: 120%; color: #245d98;"><strong>Given the complex world of modern medicine, the need for healthcare professionals to have a strong mentoring relationship at any stage of their career has never been more important. What should one look for in a mentor? How should a mentoring relationship be structured? Is one-on-one mentoring the best fit, or would group or virtual mentoring be more beneficial? </strong></p>
<p>Although some hospitals and many academic centers assign a mentor as part of early career development, in other settings securing a mentor falls on the shoulders of the mentee. Let&rsquo;s explore these and other considerations that arise when trying to find the right mentor in the health professions.</p>
<h2>More Than Just Clinical Advice</h2>
<p>The benefits of working with a mentor are diverse and tangible including higher rates of job satisfaction, greater success at promotion<sup>1</sup>, improved health and wellbeing<sup>2</sup>, and the opportunity to forge a satisfying mentor-mentee relationship that can span a career.</p>
<p>Often the most difficult task is finding the right mentor, and this can lead to delay or even giving up on what many experienced clinicians perceive to be one of the highlights of their career.</p>
<p>Mentoring for primary care clinicians offers guidance in clinical decision-making, patient management, and career progression. Some of the most valuable input involves helping mentees navigate their professional journey by offering insights that formal education might not cover.</p>
<p>Mentors enhance implicit knowledge about the hidden curriculum of professionalism, ethics, values, and the art of medicine not learned from textbooks. Importantly, support from a mentor provides emotional encouragement and professional reinforcement, which is vital in today&rsquo;s demanding healthcare environment.</p>

<h2>Mentoring Relationships</h2>
<p>Mentoring relationships are not one-size-fits-all and the structure should be tailored to the needs and goals of the mentee. One-on-one mentoring provides personalized guidance and support. The close relationship between mentor and mentee allows for focused advice and skill development, and in-depth discussions about career goals and challenges. Group or peer mentoring involves multiple clinicians, often at similar career stages, who come together to share experiences and knowledge. Learning from colleagues in a group setting encourages collaborative problem-solving and fosters a sense of community<sup>3</sup>. Either of these options may occur in person or virtually. The key is to structure the relationship to provide flexibility and accessibility for both the mentee and mentor to meet the demands of busy schedules and evolving career goals.</p>
<p>In all mentoring relationships, finding the right mentor is a crucial first step. David Weismiller, MD, professor at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Family and Community Medicine, has been involved in mentoring for 30 years.&nbsp; He is a big proponent of peer mentoring. &ldquo;Bringing people together at similar stages of their lives &ndash; whether clinicians or academicians &ndash; who are going through the same thing at the same professional moment can be a very powerful way to discover how we do the best work and how we learn the best,&rdquo; said Dr. Weismiller. &nbsp;</p>
<p>In a recent episode of the AMA&rsquo;s Moving Medicine podcast, host, Alex McDonald, MD,&nbsp;family medicine, talks about how clinicians may have multiple mentors whom they reach out to for different needs throughout their career.&nbsp; &ldquo;I think the other thing, which we don't necessarily always think about, is we can have different mentors for different aspects. You can have a research mentor. You can have a professional development mentor. I mean, I practice family medicine and sports medicine, and so I have different mentors maybe for sports medicine versus for primary care. And I think it's okay to have a menu of mentors, if you will, and you go to those different mentors for different things,&rdquo; says Dr. McDonald.</p>
<p>Identifying a potential mentor may start with defining your professional goals as well as qualities of an effective mentor. Effective mentors assume a coaching and an educational role. They are empathetic, willing to give their time, and willing to teach. <sup>1</sup><sup></sup></p>

<h2>Maintaining the Momentum</h2>
<p>Both the mentor and the mentee assume responsibility in establishing and maintaining an effective mentoring relationship.&nbsp; Both parties should have shared enthusiasm and tailored support of one another and the ability to effectively communicate<sup>4</sup>. Successful mentoring relationships are characterized by reciprocity, mutual respect, clear expectations, personal connection, and shared values<sup>5</sup>. &nbsp;Mentors in these relationships help manage time constraints including those that impact the actual mentorship meetings and those that relate to a goal that the mentee is working toward.&nbsp; Both mentor and mentee set expectations of one another and of the mentor relationship.&nbsp; This mutual understanding helps maintain a productive and positive mentoring relationship.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I feel that mentorship is bidirectional - it benefits the person being mentored and it benefits the mentor. I really enjoy mentoring younger individuals in my field. It&rsquo;s given me as much as I have given them,&rdquo; said Donna Ryan, MD, Professor Emerita at Pennington Biomedical in Baton Rouge, LA, and long-time CEC faculty member.</p>
<p>Sharing the success or the pitfalls of your mentor relationship with fellow healthcare professionals supports the environment of continuous learning. If the momentum stalls or the connection breaks, the mentee should talk to the mentor. Reflecting on the original goals, adjusting to updated expectations, or changing course altogether is part of the overall learning process. By sharing your experience, you recognize your mentor's influence and the importance of effective mentorships within the medical community.</p>
<p>&nbsp;And who knows, if you are fortunate enough as a mentee to reap the rewards by finding an outstanding mentor during your career, it may lead to the ultimate "pay it forward" when you become a rock star mentor for someone else!&nbsp;</p>

Making the Most of Your Bonita Springs Visit

<p style="font-size: 20px; font-style: italic; line-height: 120%; color: #245d98;"><strong>Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), currently is the strongest, single, inherited risk factor for early cardiac disease and aortic stenosis.</strong></p>
<p>During our recent Spring conference on the Big Island of Hawaii, Dr. Pam Taub, stressed that elevated Lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), currently is the strongest, single, inherited risk factor for early cardiac disease and aortic stenosis.&nbsp; Dr. Taub is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Founding Director of the Step Family Foundation Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;Impacting about 1 in 5 people worldwide, Dr. Taub outlined the importance of measuring Lp(a) levels in all adults at least once to identify individuals with high Lp(a) levels to better manage cardiovascular disease risk factors. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Dr. Taub referenced the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1933287424000333?ref=pdf_download&amp;fr=RR-2&amp;rr=88e1f4c74fdb7c2d" aria-invalid="true"><em>Journal of Clinical Lipidology</em></a><em>, </em>which<em> </em>included an update to the 2019 NLA scientific statement on use of lipoprotein(a) in clinical practice in its most recent issue. The article includes stratification levels for patients based on their Lp(a) levels and stresses that measuring the Lp(a) at least once in all adults and in selected high-risk children can optimize the management and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors.</p>
<p>&nbsp;&ldquo;Lp(a) has more diabolical features than LDL. Lp(a) is a more proatherogenic and prothrombotic module,&rdquo; said Dr. Taub.&nbsp; &ldquo;In North America alone, there are more than 73 million people with an elevated Lp(a) level."</p>

Meet and Measure Lipoprotein(a), the Evil, Diabolical Cousin of LDL  

<p style="font-size: 18px; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; line-height: 120%; color: #245d98;">On a recent trip to the Big Island of Hawaii for our 8th Annual Clinical Issues in Primary Care Conference, we discovered a unique find amidst the lush landscapes and volcanic scenery of the Kohala Coast&mdash;Islander Sake Brewery Hawaii.</p>
<p>Located in the clubhouse of the Hapuna Golf Course, the brewery is a fusion of Japanese tradition and Hawaiian charm, creating a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors, whether or not they have an appreciation for sake. During our visit, we had the pleasure of touring the brewery, tasting their excellent sake, and learning about the history of sake making in Japan and in Hawaii.</p>
<h2>A Warm Welcome and a Rich History</h2>

<p>Our adventure began with a warm welcome from Tama Hirose, whose passion for sake and its history was truly infectious. As we sampled the offerings, Tama entertained us with tales of sake's origins, tracing its roots back over a thousand years in Japan. He explained how the art of sake brewing has been meticulously preserved and passed down through generations. Tama also highlighted the Hawaii's long yet abandoned history with sake and its rebirth with the founding of Islander Sake.</p>
<p>Islander Sake Brewery, however, brings a unique twist to this ancient craft. Founded with the vision of creating premium sake using local Hawaiian ingredients, the brewery represents a beautiful blend of cultural traditions. Tama shared how the pristine waters of Hawaii and the unique climate of the Big Island contribute to the distinct flavor profile of their sake, making it unlike any other.</p>
<h2 style="clear: both;">Meet the Master Brewer: Chiaki Takahashi</h2>

<p>One of the highlights of our visit was meeting Chiaki Takahashi, the master brewer behind Islander Sake. Chiaki's journey to becoming a master brewer is as inspiring as the sake she crafts. Originally a medical researcher, Chiaki's analytical mind and scientific background were instrumental in her transition to sake brewing. During a tour of the brewery, it was easy to see that her dedication to precision and quality is evident in every step of the brewing process.</p>
<p>Chiaki walked us through the intricate process of sake production, from selecting the finest Japanese and California rice to the careful fermentation and aging stages. She explained how the brewery combines traditional Japanese techniques with innovative methods to create their signature sake. Each bottle reflects Chiaki's meticulous attention to detail and her passion for perfection.</p>
<h2>The Sake Tasting Experience</h2>
<p>No visit to Islander Sake Brewery would be complete without a tasting session. In the tasting room, which overlooked the greens of the Hapuna Golf Course and the blue ocean beyond, we had the opportunity to sample a variety of their sake offerings, each with its unique flavor and aroma. The delicate balance of sweetness, acidity, and umami in their sake is a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of the brewing team.</p>
<p>One of our favorites was the Junmai Daiginjo, a premium sake with a smooth, clean taste and a hint of fruity notes. Another standout was the Nigori sake, with its creamy texture and rich, complex flavor. As we sipped each sample, Tama provided insights into the characteristics of the sake, enhancing my appreciation for the artistry involved in its creation.</p>

The Mendenhall Glacier is a 13 mile long glacier located within the city limits. The Taku Glacier is the deepest and thickest &ldquo;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taku_Glacier" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alpine temperate glacier</a>&rdquo; in the world. This glacier is 4,845 feet thick and about 36 miles long. It is mostly located in the boundaries of the Tongass National Forest</p>

Top 5 Must-See’s in Juneau, Alaska

<p>When it comes to visiting the Palm Coast area of Florida, the <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/bulow-plantation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park</a> is not to be missed. Located in Flagler Beach, this historic state park showcases the ruins of a pre-Civil War plantation and sugar mill. At its prime, it was the <strong>largest plantation in East Florida</strong>. Today, you can visit the site and learn about Florida and America&rsquo;s fascinating past.</p>
<h3>Major Charles Bulow&nbsp;</h3>
<p>In 1821, Major Charles Bulow purchased 4,675 acres of wilderness bordering a waterway that is now called Bulow Creek. He cleared 2,200 acres and planted sugar cane, cotton, rice, and indigo. The plantation came to an abrupt end at the outbreak of the Second Seminole War. In 1836, a band of raiding Seminole Indians, resisting their removal to the West, looted and burned the plantation. It never recovered. Today, the coquina walls (made up of crushed seashells) and a few chimneys of the sugar mill remain standing as a monument to the rise and fall of the sugar plantations of East Florida.</p>
<p>Bulow Creek is recognized as a State Canoe Trail. Each bend of the channel reveals new scenery and opportunity for wildlife sightings, including the occasional bald eagles and Florida manatees. Canoes can be rented by the day or hour from the park office, which can also provide a map.</p>
<p>A small picnic area, complete with grills, is located along the scenic Bulow Creek. There is a screened pavilion available for reservations for larger groups or parties. This pavilion has become quite popular for family reunions and birthday events.</p>
<h3>The Bulow Woods Trail</h3>
<p>The Bulow Woods Trail is a 6.8 mile hiking trail that runs from the Fairchild Oak in Bulow Creek State Park to Bulow Plantation Ruins State Historic Site. The northern section near Bulow Ruins is recommended for half-day hikes. Wildlife such as deer, owls, and raccoons are commonly seen. The hiking trail is open for day use from 8:30 am to sunset.</p>
<p>The park is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. The entrance fee is $4 per vehicle with up to eight people. Please check the website for any changes to times or fees. The Sugar Mill Ruins is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The Interpretive Center has original artifacts and exhibits on Bulow Plantation.</p>

Palm Coast, Florida - Destinations on Land

<p><strong><span style="color: #236fa1;"><em>Kiawah Island is well known for its relaxing beaches, Southern charm, and family fun but perhaps its best-known secret is that it is one of the best places in the world to see dolphins in their natural habitat.&nbsp;</em></span></strong></p>
<p>You don&rsquo;t have to travel as far down south as Florida or plan an exotic getaway for the chance to get in in touch with these charismatic creatures. If you decide to join us for our annual Continuing Education Company Primary Care CME conference in Kiawah, you&rsquo;re almost guaranteed to see the legendary bottlenose dolphin as they swim in play in the shallow tides if you know the right place to look.</p>
<p>Besides being the most widely recognized dolphin species on Earth, the bottlenose is celebrated for its intelligence, ingenuity, and curious charm. It&rsquo;s hard not to fall in love with these animals whether you&rsquo;ve seen them performing at your local zoo or have been lucky enough to spot them in the wild. Thanks to environmental protection programs and advances in marine biology and ocean exploration we are learning more and more about these creatures as time goes on. Kiawah is one of the best places to see these dolphins in their natural habitat because it lacks the noise and traffic that a lot of other tourist destinations have. The overall relaxing atmosphere isn&rsquo;t just ideal for families looking for a bit of serenity on their vacation but it makes the dolphins a lot less shy to approach the land.</p>
<h3>Strand feeding</h3>
<p>Silence isn&rsquo;t the only draw dolphins have to the island. The shallow waters and abundant sandbars make it one of the most ideal places to witness one of the rarest dolphin behaviors on the planet, strand feeding. <a href="https://www.kiawahisland.org/dolphin-strand-feeding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Strand feeding</a> is a recently documented learned behavior unique to the bottlenose and takes place when a group of dolphins begins to herd a school of fish or shrimp into shallower and shallower water either near a sandbar or beach. Once the school is trapped with no place to escape the dolphins take turns launching themselves out of the water pushing the fish or shrimp onto the shore where they are devoured. It can be a little harrowing to see dolphins flopping on the dry land but they are far from helpless. After watching the behavior of their elders the youngsters quickly take to the feeding frenzy and are able to navigate back into the water with ease. What makes witnessing strand feeding so special isn&rsquo;t just its surreal beauty but the fact that it demonstrates intelligence and ingenuity rarely seen outside of primates.</p>
<p>If you&rsquo;re looking to watch for dolphins yourself while on vacation you&rsquo;ll get plenty of opportunities either on your own or with a professional guide. You are more than welcome to go searching for the dolphins but be aware that it is against the law to approach, provoke, and feed them in the wild but if one approaches you, you&rsquo;re more than welcome to stay just let the dolphin make the rules. If you want to watch for dolphins and stretch your legs two of the best places to see them are <a href="https://andellinn.com/blog/where-to-see-dolphins-on-kiawah-island/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Beach Walker County Park</a> where they&rsquo;re often seen passing from one place to another or <a href="https://andellinn.com/blog/where-to-see-dolphins-on-kiawah-island/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Captain Sam&rsquo;s Inlet</a> a few hours before or after low tide where they are often seen strand feeding. If you&rsquo;re wanting more of an independent adventure you&rsquo;re more than welcome to <a href="https://kiawahresort.com/recreation/paddling-tours/kayak-rentals/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rent a kayak</a> and explore the muddy inlets and marshes yourself as you search for these amazing creatures and spot all the other amazing wildlife.</p>
